Report: X Factor

We have a clear winner – for last weekend anyway.

Saturday 15th October saw Janet Devlin steal the show with her spine-tingling performance of ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’. Admittedly it’s a sweet song, but she put a new spin on it that showed it to me in a new light – I’ve been listening to it ever since, and certainly singing it in the shower! Like good old Gary said she’s a ‘great translator of music’ we ‘don’t hear every note you sing, but feel it’. It really was one of those performances that just leaves you with a happy smile on your face, contented with life, and feeling that all is right.

Of course though with the good comes the bad, (and the ugly) this week the bad was unfortunately Janet’s sob story. I know, cynical, stone-hearted man you’re thinking. But, even if her Granddad did die this week (I’m sure X Factor wouldn’t be that lame as to make something like that up) it wasn’t relevant to the programme. It should be about their singing, not their personal history. You don’t go into a job interview and then say afterwards ‘I want to dedicate that interview to my Dog who died last week’ as it’s just irrelevant. Whether it was a sympathy card or not that she played, it was totally unnecessary – she doesn’t need any props, excuses or rouses. She’s a winner pure and simple.

And as for the Ugly – well obviously that was Nu-Vibe. Those vocals were the ugliest I’ve heard in a long time. I do think these manufactured bands can work sometimes – but on a live show there’s no hiding the fact you’re tone deaf. I’m glad they went. Janet to win.
