A cracking win at Newcastle on Sunday means Man United are now second in the Premier League, behind Chelsea. It is of course early days still but I think we’re going to hold a much stronger position this year, judging by the quality we’ve shown, and I predict we’ll go into Christmas top of the league and go on to win it with games to spare. There you go – I’ve said before I don’t like making football predictions because I’m not normally very good at them but I’ve got a feeling this season and I think we’re going to storm it. You heard it here first and I’m even going to put a bet on while I’m thinking about it, that’s how certain I am.
Last week ended on a bit of a high as the young band I was talking about in my last post were really chuffed to come back and finish their demo off properly. I’m not normally one for going over the top with good will and handing out unearned favours but as I said, they were really nice lads and it does feel good to help out an up and coming band once in a while. They’ve promised me a mention on the sleeve notes of their first album if (when) it gets released.
At the other end of the recording spectrum, I’ve got a guy in all week this week doing voice-overs for some radio and TV adverts. It’s good work because I don’t have to do much and I get a decent rate from the production companies, but it’s a bit boring after the youthful, enthusiastic rock and roll of last week. I’ve got Friday off though so I can go out with a mate and look at some cars. He’s been thinking about leasing a Peugeot 308 and asked me to go along with him. Should be fun – I like looking at new cars.

It’s been a while since I talked about work on here, probably because it’s been fairly standard stuff I’ve been doing – some spoken-word recordings, a few voice-overs and the odd band wanting to do a song or two for demo tapes, singles or EPs. Most of the music I record these days is for established or signed bands, so they know what they’re doing. My job is basically to set up the kit, man the desk and just make sure everything’s working okay, leaving them to play and record as they like. Sometimes, especially with signed bands, they’ll even bring their own sound man, so all I have to do is sit back and watch!
I’ve had a band in this week however who are new to the game. I think the drummer’s mum paid for the studio time – two days to record a three-track demo. I like doing these jobs occasionally – it’s nice to see some enthusiasm and work with the next generation of musicians and (hopefully) music stars, but I’m not sure they got what they wanted from their sessions. They ended up with about one and a half tracks finished before they ran out of time. I’ve been thinking about where they went wrong and thought I’d put down a few tips for new bands coming into a recording studio for the first time, to help you get the most from your time and money.
- Make a plan. It’s fine to just turn up and work it out if you’ve got endless time and money but most of us don’t so you really need to arrive knowing what you’re planning to record, so you can just set up and get on with it.
- Make a plan B. Any band or musician knows that sometimes, on the day, things just don’t work. If you’re planning to record three songs and one of them just isn’t happening for you that day, you need to be able to give another one a go without a second thought.
- Prepare your kit. This week’s band wasted a good two hours sorting their kit out, looking for things they’d lost, untangling wires, replacing batteries and hunting around in their car for lost accessories. Time in a studio can go really quickly and costs a lot of money, so come prepared.
- Make yourselves at home. Feeling comfortable in your surroundings is so important if you want your recordings to sound as good as possible. If possible, visit the studio before you book it to make sure you like the place, and take anything with you that makes you feel more comfortable – I’ve had people bringing rugs, candles and even wall hangings into my studio. The vocals on the first track we recorded this week weren’t right and only after recording them the singer said he really likes to sing in bare feet. “Why didn’t you then?” I asked. “Because I didn’t think it was allowed,” he said. You need to remember that a recording studio is a creative place, not a technical bunker for the sound engineer.
- Do what works for you. If you like playing as a band and want to record a fully-live sound, then do that. The feeling and emotion of the music will come through on the recording and make up for any elements of the quality that aren’t quite perfect. This week’s band assumed we’d be recording all their parts separately, in sound-proof booths with headphones on, and were a little nervous about that. Once I’d got them set up and recording as a live band they were a lot more comfortable, but unfortunately we ran out of time to do everything they wanted.
They were nice kids though and did have a lot of talent so I’ve said I’ll do them one more day, for free, to get their three-track demo finished off. You never know, one day they could be really big and I’d be kicking myself for not helping them out.

Strangely for me, I actually ended up turning the England football game off last week. I looked at the result afterwards, of course, and was pleased we managed to get a goal back to draw 1-1, but the play in the first half was so uninspiring I just thought to myself, I’ve got better things to be doing than spending another 45 minutes watching this. So I went and did them. I’m sure I’ll get into international football again at some point but right now it’s doing nothing for me.
Man United, on the other hand, smashed Wigan 4-0 on Saturday, which sets us up really nicely for this week’s Champions League game against Galatasary. I will be watching all of that game, of course, although I think I will quickly lose patience with United if they pull last season’s trick of doing really badly in the Champions League. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
I’ve got an average week in the studio this week, which I’m quite grateful for after last week’s workload. There’s a band in at the moment for three days, recording a single (I’m not impressed with them myself but that’s irrelevant I suppose), and I’ve got a morning of voice-over to record on Friday then that’s it for the week. It gives me Thursday off to do a bit of shopping, maybe go and look at a few cars and potentially get over the celebratory beers from Wednesday night’s Champions League victory. See, I am trying to keep in a positive frame of mind.
Oh, and for what it’s worth (which isn’t a lot) here’s my prediction for Wednesday night:
Man United 3, Galatasary 1.

Thankfully things seem to be picking up for Man United, with a last-minute but deserved win over Southampton on Sunday. It was our second 3-2 win of the season and Robin Van Persie is already showing, after just three games, why he was such a good signing for us. He scored a hat-trick after having missed a penalty, taking his tally to four goals in three games. If he continues like this we’re in for a hell of a season and hopefully we’ll be able to seal the title well before the last game, unlike last year. I know what my football predictions are like though so I’m not going so far as to predict it – I’ll just keep my fingers crossed for now.
I’ve also been watching a bit of the Vuelta a Espana cycling race. Team Sky’s Chris Froome was in contention for the red jersey last week but he’s slipping a bit now, with Rodriguez, Contador and Valverde looking like they’ll make up the podium places. You’d have to say Rodriguez is favourite to win it overall. He looks the strongest in the mountains and Contador just can’t seem to shake him off, even when things get really steep. Monday’s stage this week was amazing, with the final kilometre at about a twenty-two percent gradient – it looked like cycling up a wall.
I’ve got a fairly quiet few weeks in the studio now, with just two days of recording to do this week and a bit of mastering next week. I think people are getting organised after the summer, preparing the kids for school and getting back into a working pattern. I’d like to do that too but unfortunately at times like this things like recording music get put to one side, so I’ll just have to wait for it to pick up again. I have been thinking about marketing the studio a bit more, to get some more business in. I’ll give it another month or two and see how things are going.

Not exactly the start to the new Premier League season I was hoping for. Man City had quite an exciting opening match against Southampton and managed to come out on top, winning 3-2 after being 2-1 down with only twenty minutes to go. It’s early days yet but we only have to look at the climax of last season to know that every point counts and, after the first round of matches, City are clearly realising that more than United.
We obviously had a few problems in defence, with Ferdinand out injured, but I really thought we were going to start the season with a bit more of a spark, especially after losing it so dramatically to City last year. Even Robin van Persie coming on in the second half didn’t seem to inspire us and we lost it 1-0 in the end. Disappointing but we’ve obviously got time to improve – I just hope this isn’t an indication of how the whole season is going to go.
We’re at home to Fulham this Saturday and I’m going along with a couple of mates, to mark the first game of the season at Old Trafford. Hopefully we’ll see a better result and get the season going properly. Otherwise I’m working a lot this week, with a band in the studio for four days, and I’ve been watching a bit of the tour of Spain – a big cycling race like the Tour de France called the Vuelta. Chris Froome is leading Team Sky, hoping to improve on his second place from last year. If he does it would be amazing, especially after his Tour de France performance this year and his medal at the Olympics.

The band finally got a decent take of their single down yesterday afternoon, playing it straight through with no mistakes. It does sound good but I can’t help feeling their nerves and anxiety at not making it all the way through held them back a little with their playing – I’m sure it would sound much more fluid and relaxed if there was no pressure on them, or if they recorded all their parts separately, but that’s not really a decision I’m here to make. I can advise them on what I think is best, which I did, but ultimately it has to come from them. They are paying I suppose – or at least their record company are.
We finished about 3pm so I was able to watch the last hour of the Tour de France. Yesterday was the first of two big mountain stages that could potentially have decided the overall race so it was a very important day for Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky. Nibali attacked on the final climb, as I thought he would, but Wiggins and Chris Froome had it covered. Their other big rival this year, defending champion Cadel Evans, got dropped earlier in the stage and seemed to be struggling all day. He said afterwards that he had a stomach upset, which obviously doesn’t help when you’re trying to ride a bike over four massive mountains.
If Wiggins gets through today without losing any time it looks like his Tour de France victory is in the bag and it’ll be a very special day for British sport if he makes it to Paris in yellow on Sunday.

After the comedown from Euro 2012 and Andy Murray losing Wimbledon, it was nice to have a week or so without watching loads of sport. I’ve picked up the Tour de France again now though and it has really come together for a brilliant last week, with British rider Bradley Wiggins leading the race. He needs to keep hold of the yellow jersey for another five stages to make it a historic overall win, but only three of those stages give his rivals any real opportunity to take it from him – the mountains on Wednesday and Thursday this week and the individual time trial on Saturday. If nothing major happens on those days, like Wiggins crashing or having a serious lack of form in the hills, he should still be in yellow as they arrive in Paris on Sunday. It would be a great day for British sport as no Brit has ever won the biggest race in cycling.
I won’t be cycling through the Pyrenees or into Paris this week, unfortunately. I’ve got a pretty busy week in the studio with it booked out Monday to Friday. We’re recording a single for a Manchester band at the moment, which is going okay. They’ve decided to record it all live which is fairly unusual these days – most bands will record one or two bits at a time, usually with the singer doing the vocals last. I can understand that they want to get a live ‘feel’ to the music in the recording but it does make things a little trickier for them, mainly because they have to get through one perfect take, without anyone messing their part up. They’ve not managed it yet today so we’ll see how we get on – I might have to persuade them to split it up a bit.
I’m off out looking at cars this weekend again, on Saturday morning. We’re going to look at a new Renault Clio so my mate can compare the finance deals to the price he paid for the second hand one he bought last week. He thinks with all the tax, insurance and MOTs you get with the new models it might be worth switching. We’ll see – I’m going to take the opportunity to take a nice brand new car for a test drive, just for the fun of it.

A good week this week and I feel like I’ve got loads done, without all the football and tennis to keep up with. The band were really cool and we finished a cracking demo for them, which they’ll be sending out to promoters, agents and labels over the next week or so. I had a bit of a stint in a band, many, many years ago. We never got as far as recording a demo or anything but I remember the excitement of thinking that one day someone might discover us and offer us a record deal, or maybe just a slot on the main stage at Glastonbury. That never happened, of course, but the fact that it could have done, by some twist of fate or chance encounter, was enough to keep us interested. We only played one gig, if I remember rightly, then the singer left to go and live in Hong Kong, or something weird like that.
The car shopping trip this afternoon went well, eventually. We sat in traffic for about an hour to get to the first place, which was only seven miles away. My mate was getting really frustrated with it but I just sat playing Frutopia games on my iPad – I’m glad I took that along in the end. He ended up buying a really nice little Renault Clio in the third garage we went to. It’s only a few years old and has done a few miles but it was in perfect condition and he got it for a good price, so that’s him sorted.
Naturally, I didn’t buy anything, but I was sitting in some off-road vehicles that look like a lot of fun. Maybe I’ll scrap the search for a practical, spacious car that I can use for studio stuff and at the weekends, and just get something that’s fun to drive but completely impractical. I’ll have to have a think about that.

After all the sporting excitement over the last few weeks it’s nice to have a bit of a break and think about something else for a change. I’ve got a lot of work on in the studio this week and I’m looking forward to really getting into it. A local band are in for three days recording their first demo and I love the excitement and enthusiasm that brings – they’re so full of optimism and it reminds me of what I was like when I first started in this game. I must be getting old and jaded now.
On Thursday afternoon a mate and I are heading out to look at some second hand cars. We’re planning to get to about six or seven different places so it’s going to be busy, but good fun hopefully. We’ll be looking for him mainly as he’s in desperate need of a run around – he got shunted from behind last week, which wrote his car off, and he needs to get back on the road as soon as possible. I’ll be looking at cars for me, as ever – I still haven’t found the right model for me yet and I’m determined to get the perfect one, and that’s only going to happen if I keep looking. One day, you never know, I might come back from a trip like this having actually bought a car. There seems to be about as much chance of that at the moment as there is of me getting a sporting prediction right.

I’ve not watched as much sport as I thought I would this week. I have kept an eye on Andy Murray’s scores at Wimbledon and I’m pleased he’s in the semi final tomorrow but I’ve not felt the need to watch every point, like I have in the past. Likewise the cycling – it is only the first week of the Tour de France and the race won’t be decided yet but I normally watch a lot more than I have been. Maybe all the sport this summer has just got too much for me – and we haven’t even got to the Olympics yet.
Still, it means I’ve had a bit of free time to do some other things. Work was good this week, recording a single for a signed band and doing some mastering work on one of their old albums that they weren’t happy with. I’ve also had a big booking for most of September. It came straight from a record company, which is quite unusual, and they didn’t give many details other than they wanted to record an album. I reckon it could either be a newly signed band they want to get to work as soon as possible or maybe a secret project from an established group. We’ll see – you never know, I might have Justin Bieber in here recording his next album.
I’m winding down for the weekend now really – a bit of sorting out in the studio tomorrow and I guess I will be watching the tennis. Can Andy Murray make it to a Wimbledon final? We’ll find out soon.
